QUICK FAMILY REUNION 2003
QUICK FAMILY REUNION - 26th OCTOBER 2003 - BALLARAT (VICTORIA)
HISTORYNathaniel Williams Quick emigrated to Australia with his wife Susannah (nee SANDOW) and 6 of their 7 (8?) children. Their seventh child - Susan - was married at the time and travelled later with her husband James Quick (a cousin) and their children.
- There was an 8th and oldest child - Jane Williams Quick, born in 1829 - who did not make the trip. Details on her are unknown; she either died young, or had established her own life by 1853 and decided not to emigrate with the rest of the family.
The 6 children who accompanied Nathaniel & Susannah were: 1. Nathaniel Jnr (who was accompanied by his wife, Sarah) 2. Richard 3. Robert 4. Charlotte Sandow 5. William Edward 6. John Nathaniel (Jnr) & Sarah (nee LUKE) were only recently married at the time (married in March 1853) and had no children then - all their children were born in Australia.
The family travelled on board the ship Euphemus, which departed Plymouth on 7th April 1853 and arrived at Geelong (Victoria) on 18th July 1853. Susan and her husband James Quick arrived the following year aboard the ship Apolline, which landed on 3rd November 1854, also in Geelong. They brought their children Jane and James; a third child, Elizabeth, was born on the ship. (They were all assisted passengers, as opposed to unassisted - a point to remember when searching archives in Victoria, as they are listed in different locations).
The ship's passenger list shows Nathaniel (Snr) as being aged 44 (which accords with one recorded birth date of 1809) and a stonemason by trade. His son Nathaniel is listed as being an Agricultural Labourer, as was his son-in-law James on the Apolline. Many of the other ages listed on the passenger list, though, seem to be inaccurate. For example, Nathaniel Snr’s wife Susannah is listed as being aged 44 but her birth certificate shows her as born on 16th September 1804, which would make her aged 48, and several years older than her husband, although, as noted above, there are conflicting dates regarding his birth year. The ages of most of the children shown on the passenger list don’t accord with their birth certificates either: eg., John (born 1838) would have been aged either 15 or 14 (his birth month is unknown), but is listed as age 13. There is no age shown for Richard, but he was aged 8 or 9 (born 1844, actual date unknown). William is shown as age 17 but was already 18 (born February 1835) by the time the ship left Plymouth in April. Robert is shown as age 14 but was 16 (born October 1836).
The family all hailed from St Ives in Cornwall.

THE REUNION
A reunion was held in Ballarat on Sunday 26th October 2003, to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival in Australia of this clan of Quicks. Ballarat was chosen because it was to this area that most of the Quicks gravitated shortly after arriving in Australia and there is still a sizeable population of Quicks and their descendants in the area.
The reunion brought together nearly 150 descendants of Nathaniel and Susannah - see Reunion Attendance List page. Most were descendants of Nathaniel and Sarah, but there were also a number of descendants of Susan and James. I have shown the lineage of each person who attended, so that people can see where they fit into the broad scheme.
